What to Watch This Week: “1922”

My dear friends I ask you to for one second to reminisce on the now dead franchise, Blockbuster. Please take a moment of silence to remember the dearly departed. Now we’ll fast forward to present day and think about Netflix.

According to Forbes, the online movie and TV streaming platform is worth $61.6 billion dollars. Not a bad deal for only being twenty years old.

Netflix has been efficiently allocating their earnings by creating a handful of notable new content e.g. Stranger Things.

Today the focus is on a new Netflix original titled, “1922″. This hour and forty-two minute adaptation of Stephen King’s novella was written and directed by Zak Hilditch. Unfortunately, I have not read the novella so I did not have much to compare or reference to. I would consider this a good thing because I almost always think the book is better than the movie. Getting back to the point, this ominous crime thriller is definitely the film you want to watch to get you into the halloween mood. I won’t give away any spoilers because where’s the fun in that? Just know this film is not for the faint hearted as there are numerous gory scenes. It will pull and your heart strings while simultaneously keeping your eyes on the screen.

The plot centers around farm owner, Wilfred Leland James, confessing to the murder of his wife. The death of his wife is only the beginning of an array of consequences Wilfred faces throughout the progression of the film. What would you do to keep what you love?

The cinematographer sets cool tones in the film to bring to life the eerie atmosphere of the dead. The motion picture offers an elegant arrangement of shots ranging from wide angle to close ups that make the viewer feel like they’re on set.

1922 definitely gets a five star rating in my book. Watch it, let me know what you think!

This Week’s Binge: 13 Reasons Why

When I was in high school I read a book titled, “Th1rteen R3asons Why” written by Jay Asher. From as far back as I can remember I’ve always had my head stuck in a book. Reading for me provides an escape from reality it allows me to dive right into the setting of a novel and become apart of the world of words. I’ve always pretended to be a fly on the wall or an additional character in whatever I am reading. I’m always a little taken back when individuals discourage reading. I get it though, we all have difference cups of tea!

Even now at 21 years old Asher’s novel still remains on my list of favorites. I was a bit skeptical when hearing of Netflix’s adaptation of the book, “13 Reasons Why”. Central to both the novel and Netflix series is that Clay Jensen receives a set of 13 tapes two weeks after classmate and secret crush, Hannah Baker, commits suicide. Each of the tapes tells the one reason (and person) responsible for her suicide. Clay must listen to all the tapes to find out why he is one of the reasons Hannah killed herself.

While no movie or series could ever capture the true essence of a book, I do enjoy watching Netflix’s adaptation. There are notable differences between the novel and the series. Let’s see if you can pick up on them!  It’s always entertaining to see something that was once words come to life on screen.

I’m currently on episode eight of the series with just five more episodes left. Hopefully creator Brian Yorkey and executive producer Selena Gomez do not disappoint in the final stretch of the series.

(The series has a total of 13 episodes that run at one hour each. A half day of binging!)

Read it. Watch it. Let me know how YOU feel.
